KONGSBERG is the world`s leading provider of remote weapon systems and has to date delivered more than 20,000 PROTECTOR systems to more than 26 nations.
About KONGSBERG Remote Weapon Systems (RWS)
Two centuries of innovation, transformation and delivering results has made Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA) a recognised global technology leader and a leading supplier within defence, surveillance, space, aerostructures and maintenance repair and overhaul. We take pride in developing advanced solutions and products of strategic importance, for markets around the world.
The PROTECTOR family
KONGSBERG is the world`s leading provider of RWS and has to date delivered more than 20,000 PROTECTOR systems to more than 26 nations, with millions of hours of operational experience in combat zones. The PROTECTOR family includes multiple variants of weapon stations (RS) and turrets ( RT).
PROTECTOR systems are suitable for any mission, whether on land or at sea, on mobile or static platforms, for remote operation of payloads ranging from small caliber weapons to medium caliber automatic cannons, ATGM and SHORAD missile systems. All systems utilise the same baseline technology and are modular, flexible and expandable.
The PROTECTOR is designed and built for operation in extreme environmental conditions, enabling soldiers to operate effectively from a protected position or a remote location by using precision optics and weapons to observe, detect, and engage targets with high accuracy. This saves soldiers’ lives, and reduces ammunition expenditure and the risk for collateral damage significantly.
Common characteristics for all KONGSBERG RWS
- Highly accurate and reliable
- Customised sensors
- Automatic tilt and cant compensation
- Automatic lead angle correction
- Target tracking
- Common network based fire control
- Safe operation from within the platform
- Robotics ready
- Mounts on any platform that can carry the respective system weight
- Qualified for global operations
- Flexible and modular
- Low life cycle cost
PROTECTOR RS
PROTECTOR RS include the RS2, RS4 and RS6 Remote Weapon Stations, all of which can mount 5.56 to 12.7mm machine guns, 40mm AGL or missile systems. The RS2, with a starting weight of just 60kg and single weapon mount, is the most compact station and a perfect choice for smaller tactical vehicles, robotic platforms and tactical support systems with weight restrictions.
The RS4, the world’s most fielded RWS, has a system weight of just 135kg, can mount single or dual weapons and is well suited to both land and maritime operations, on wheeled, tracked and maritime platforms.
The RS6, with a starting weight of 380kg, can integrate lighter medium caliber cannons, in combination with machine guns and missile systems. It can mount additional cannons up to LW-30mm and ATGM or SHORAD missiles, with sensors matching the extended range of the cannon and long-range ATGMs. The RS6 is selected by un-disclosed customers for integration of multi-specter weapon systems.
PROTECTOR RT
PROTECTOR RT provides accurate firepower for wheeled and tracked combat vehicles. The system is the first remotely operated turret to be qualified and fielded within the U.S. Army. The RT is also designated as the “lethality” Government Furnished Equipment by the U.S. Army for the medium variants of the Service’s nascent Robotic Combat Vehicle program.
Common Characteristics
- Mounts medium caliber cannons in combination with a coaxial machine gun, missile systems, smoke grenades and a roof mounted commanders panoramic sight or RWS
- Mounts 30 to 40mm automatic cannons with a growth path to 50mm cannons
- ATGM or SHORAD missiles can be embedded/roof mounted on a RS
- The ballistic shelter protects the crew and vital parts, and functions as the base for integration of add-on protection systems, radios, threat detection sensors, smoke grenades, small UAVs, etc
- Single or dual user set up with advanced hunter killer capabilities
- Reload from under armour
- Low weight and profile
The RT20 is the smallest and lightest turret, starting at 1250 kg, seen deployed on the USMC Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV) and Advanced Reconnaissance Vehicle (ARV).
The RT40, seen deployed on US Army Stryker Dragoon, has a starting weight of 2400 kg, with increased level 2-3 armour.
The RT60, with a starting weight of 3500 kg, has level 3-4 armour, a commanders independent RS4 weapon station and a dual, integrated twin ATGW system that can fire JAVELIN, SPIKE and MMP.
